Saint-Germain-des-Prés

back to previous page

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris on the Left Bank, is one of the most famous and historic neighborhoods of the capital.

Originally, the district developed around the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, founded in the 6th century. During the Middle Ages, the abbey was an important religious and intellectual center. At the time, the area was outside the walls of Paris, in the middle of meadows (hence the name “des Prés,” meaning “of the meadows”).

From the 17th century onward, the district became a sought-after residential area with the construction of numerous private mansions. In the 19th century, Haussmann’s transformations modernized its streets while preserving its historic character.

In the 20th century, Saint-Germain-des-Prés became a symbol of intellectual and artistic life. After World War II, famous cafés such as Les Deux Magots and the Café de Flore welcomed writers, philosophers, and artists, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and other figures of existentialism.

Today, the district is known for:

  • Its art galleries
  • Its bookstores and publishing houses
  • Its elegant boutiques
  • Its cultural and historic atmosphere

Saint-Germain-des-Prés represents a blend of medieval history, classical elegance, and modern cultural life, making it one of Paris’s most emblematic neighborhoods.
